    Do digital technologies enhance anatomical education?

    Anatomy has been taught by traditional methods for centuries. However, there has been an explosion of a variety of digital training resources for anatomical education. There is also a requirement from regulatory bodies to embrace digital technologies in teaching, yet no formal analysis has been undertaken as to the effectiveness of these products and tools. A comprehensive electronic database search was performed to identify the use, and effectiveness or otherwise, of digital technologies in anatomy, medicine, surgery, dentistry and the allied health professions. The data was pooled, analysed and we identified 164 articles. We identified two groups – those that did, and those that did not, have empirical data for analysis of the effectiveness of digital technologies in anatomical education. We identified three categories within this –pro, neutral and against the use of digital technologies. For the pro category, there were 35 (21.3%) empirically tested articles, and 91 (55.5%) non-empirically tested articles identified. In the neutral category, there were 19 (11.6%) empirically tested articles, and 16 (9.8%) non-empirically tested articles. Only 3 articles were against the use of digital technologies, and were in the empirically tested category. The majority of literature related to digital technologies in anatomical education is supportive of its use. However, most of the literature is not supported with empirical data related to the use of digital technologies in anatomy specific education within the health and related disciplines. Further studies need to be conducted as to the effectiveness of technology in medical/healthcare related education

    Prolonged hospitalization effects on psychosocial development in chronic illness pediatric populations Abstract Courtney Cumberland, Sophie Kinrade, Megan Pringle, and Zoe Quarles Background/Objective: Frequent and extensive hospitalizations have a negative impact on the psychosocial development of children in the most formative years of their lives. This problem is most evident in children who have chronic disease or health conditions that require multiple hospital stays and interventions. This topic can be considered broad because of the extensive variety of chronic conditions and how that determines a child\u27s length of stay. This study aims to identify whether patient-to-patient interaction impacts the psychosocial development in children who experience these extended and repetitive hospitalizations. Methods: Research was guided by the John Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model. Google Scholar, EBSCOHost, and PubMed were the databases used to search for key terms which included “prolonged hospitalization”, “chronic illnesses”, “psychosocial development”, “pediatric”, “school-aged”, and “chronic”. Only relevant evidence data from the last five years are analyzed to ensure the validity of the study and uncover the best evidence-based practice to implement. Results: A total of ten articles were appraised for the study. The following themes were identified: prolonged hospitalizations led to social developmental delays, there is an increased risk of delay in developmental milestones, and peer group interventions are recommended for better outcomes. Depending on the age, severity of illness, and peer interactions, children’s development is affected. Conclusion: Prolonged hospitalizations affect children\u27s ability to reach developmental milestones. There are many different factors that play a role in reaching development milestones, and healthcare providers need to consider these factors in developing evidence-based interventions appropriate for this group

    Sustaining health improvement activities delivered in English professional football clubs using evaluation: a short communication

    It has been suggested that football and communities are inextricably linked. Healthy lifestyles are an important component in maintaining the sustainability of local communities, not least, because a convincing evidence base supports the holistic benefits that can be derived from health-enhancing behaviours, such as regular physical activity. As such, efforts to promote health improvement through sport and physical activity include those interventions delivered in professional sporting settings. Johnman and colleagues (Johnman and Mackie, ‘The Beautiful Game’) have heralded sports clubs as important venues for the delivery of health improvement interventions for a range of groups across local communities. This includes health improvement activities delivered in professional football club community schemes. While exemplary practice shows how health improvement programmes can be implemented and evaluated, our experience and engagement with professional football club community schemes supports the notion that more needs to be undertaken to help clubs develop monitoring and evaluation strategies in order to assess the impact of their health improvement programmes. In our short communication, we share our plans for helping two professional football clubs develop their monitoring and evaluation strategies for their community health promotion programmes. Potential outcomes emerging from this process are twofold. (1) To help club community schemes in-build and sustain monitoring and evaluation practices within their future health improvement provision. (2) To use the impact and process outcomes emerging from programme evaluations, to successfully secure the necessary resources to sustain future health improvement activities for their local communities. Outcomes emerging from this study will be of interest to football clubs and evaluators alike, as they seek to develop evaluation strategies for their health improvement programmes

    Robotics and Automated Systems for Environmental Sustainability: Monitoring Terrestrial Biodiversity

    It is critical to protect Earth’s biodiversity, not just for its own intrinsic value, but also for the ecosystem services it underpins. Yet biodiversity is in crisis, with up to 1 million animal and plant species at risk of extinction, many within decades. This dire projection has captured world attention and triggered major mitigation efforts, but we are faced with problems in assessing global trends in biodiversity – which species, taxa, habitats and ecosystems are suffering the greatest declines? Are current mitigation measures having any positive impact? To answer key questions such as these, ecologists are seeking the help of robotics and automated systems (RAS) experts in the monumental task of attempting to monitor the state of biodiversity.In this White Paper, we have surveyed recent literature and consulted more than 120 international expert ecologists and engineers working in the fields of biodiversity and robotics. We have done this to evaluate the potential for developing robotic and autonomous systems that could massively extend the scope of terrestrial biodiversity monitoring across habitats globally. The complexities of biodiversity itself, and the many barriers and challenges that must be overcome in monitoring it, are formidable. We assess each of these barriers in turn, highlighting currently available RAS solutions, as well as nascent technologies that may be relevant to future RAS for biodiversity (RAS-BD) monitoring. Using this information, we have drawn up a roadmap of actions needed to address the barriers that should be easiest to overcome. Encouragingly, we find that a variety of existing RAS capabilities may be transferable to a biodiversity monitoring context. Beyond these are the harder barriers, where promising novel ideas being researched at UK universities and research institutes may, in time, become integral parts of future RAS-BD monitoring technology. We believe that RAS-BD technology has great potential to complement and considerably extend the field survey work undertaken by expert human observers. In the UK, we are fortunate in having particular strengths in both biodiversity and robotics research; as a nation we are in an ideal position to integrate them and become a leading force in the development and application of RAS-BD monitoring. To this end, we propose these recommendations that we hope will guide future government strategy in an area that is vital to the future of humanity:● The creation and funding of an integrated multidisciplinary task force, including academics and industry specialists with expertise in RAS and biodiversity, to support technological research and development.● Future UK funding and focus should be prioritised to utilise existing RAS capabilities to develop first generation RAS-BD technology for monitoring biodiversity.● Relevant nascent technologies being researched by numerous UK academic teams need increased and accelerated research and development funding to turn pioneering concepts into enhanced RAS-BD technology suited to overcoming the hardest monitoring barriers that ecologists encounter.● Education strategies should be developed to foster links between aspiring engineers, biologists andcomputer technologists, both in the curriculum of schools, and at later stages in universities and research facilities

    'Motivate': the effect of a Football in the Community delivered weight loss programme on over 35-year old men and women's cardiovascular risk factors

    The purpose of this study was to examine whether an innovative, inclusive and integrated 12-week exercise, behaviour change and nutrition advice-based weight management programme could significantly improve the cardiovascular risk factors of overweight and obese men and women over the age of 35. One hundred and ninety-four men and 98 women (mean age = 52.28 ± 9.74 and 51.19 ± 9.04) attending a community-based intervention delivered by Notts County Football in the Community over one year, took part in the study. Height (m), weight (kg), fitness (meters covered during a 6 min walk) and waist circumference (cm) were measured at weeks 1 and 12 as part of the intervention. Changes in body weight, waist circumference and fitness for men and women were measured by a 2-way repeated measures ANOVA, with significance set to p < 0.05.Weight, waist circumference and fitness significantly improved over time in both men (4.96 kg, 6.29 cm, 70.22 m; p < 0.05) and women (4.26 kg, 5.90 cm, 35.29 m; p < 0.05). The results demonstrated that the FITC lead weight loss intervention was successful in significantly improving cardiovascular risk factors in both men and women. In particular, the weight loss reductions achieved were comparable to those seen in similar, more costly men-only programmes. This is the first study to demonstrate the efficacy of such an intervention in an inclusive, mixed gender programme and more specifically, in women

    In this episode of the Smart Community Podcast, I had a brilliant conversation with Sofie Pringle, a designer with a passion for creating cities and urban places that increase people’s happiness and mental well-being. She is currently completing a doctorate in urban planning and design at Queensland University of Technology, focusing on the positive and negative effects that design and planning features have on user happiness and well-being. In this episode Sofie tells us about her PhD and what sparked her interest in this space, as well as why she believes there is a gap in the Smart Community conversation around the concept of happiness in the city. We also discuss sustainable urbanisation and the compact city fallacy, and why nurturing our Smart Regional Hubs is so crucial.     A mixed-methods evaluation of care (cancer and rehabilitation exercise): a physical activity and health intervention, delivered in a community football trust

    With increasing cancer survivorship has come an increased necessity to support people living with cancer (PLWC) to have a good quality of life including being physically active. Using mixed methods, the current study aimed to use the RE-AIM evaluation framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance) to determine how the football community trust delivered CARE (Cancer and Rehabilitation Exercise) intervention was able to increase participants’ physical activity in order to improve their quality of life and regain physiological and psychological function. Quantitative outcome data were collected at baseline, 3 and 6 months using the Cancer Physical Activity Standard Evaluation Framework questionnaire. Semi-structured focus groups (n = 5) captured participants’ (n = 40) lived experience of the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of CARE. Questionnaire data were analysed using repeated measures ANOVAs and qualitative data were thematically analysed. Following diagnosis, CARE was successful in providing participants with a unique and accessible opportunity to become or restart physically activity, by providing a local, socially supportive, and inclusive environment. This resulted in significant increases in physical activity (F(1.58, 23) = 5.98, p = 0.009), quality of life (QoL) (F(2,36) = 13.12, p = 0.000) and significant reductions in fatigue (F(1.57,31) = 11.19, p = 0.000) over 6 months. Participants also reported becoming more active, recovering physical function, regaining independence, and enhanced psychological well-being as a result of attending CARE. Key design features of CARE were also identified across RE-AIM. CARE, a football community trust delivered physical activity intervention was successful in significantly improving participants’ QoL and in regaining the physical and psychological functioning of people living with cancer. Results suggest that maintaining engagement in CARE for 6 months and beyond can support people to maintain these changes. Engaging in robust evaluations such as this can help organizations to successfully secure future funding for their programs.This research was supported by Leeds Beckett University who received funding from Notts County Foundation
